Jacob van Ruisdael (c. 1628–1682) was among the first to paint the wide, wind-blown beaches of the Dutch coast, with fishing boats drawn up on the sand under enormous skies. This version, made after his design, keeps that bracing sense of open air and shifting weather. The Ruisdael original is in the Mauritshuis in The Hague.
