Karasaki, on the shore of Lake Biwa near Kyoto, was famous for a single sacred pine so large that a shrine was built beneath its spreading limbs. Hiroshige's "Night Rain at Karasaki," from his 1834–35 series Eight Views of Ōmi, wraps the ancient tree in a screen of fine, vertical ink lines suggesting a steady downpour — one of the earliest and most admired treatments of the "eight views" theme, a pictorial convention borrowed originally from a much older Chinese tradition.
