The Story in the Margin

The Qing-dynasty painter Mei Qing sketched the Nine Dragon Pool during his second visit to Huangshan (the Yellow Mountains) in 1690, at the age of 68. The waterfall's nine successive curves and pools, said after heavy rain to resemble nine white dragons pouring down the rock, made it one of the most celebrated sights on a mountain already legendary among Chinese painters for its wind-sculpted pines and sea of clouds.
