“Noa Noa: The Devil Speaks (Mahna No Varua Ino)” is a woodcut Paul Gauguin (1848–1903) made in 1893–94 for his illustrated book Noa Noa, recounting his experiences in Tahiti. Gauguin carved the block with deliberately rough, expressive marks to evoke Polynesian wood carving traditions, using the image to conjure the spiritual world of Tahitian folklore that so fascinated him during his search for an art beyond European convention. The print is held in the public-domain collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art.
