Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans) is native to just one place on Earth: the small, volcanic Banda Islands of Indonesia's Moluccas, historically known as the Spice Islands. A single fruit yields two distinct spices — the hard seed at its centre is ground into nutmeg, while the lacy red membrane surrounding it is dried separately to make mace. Arab traders guarded the source of this valuable spice for centuries, and after Portuguese and then Dutch traders located the islands, the Dutch East India Company enforced a brutal monopoly, culminating in the 1621 massacre and enslavement of most of the native Bandanese population to control production. Only later, when British and French growers smuggled seedlings to Grenada, Zanzibar, and other tropical colonies, did nutmeg cultivation finally spread beyond the islands where it had grown undisturbed for millennia.
