The Story in the Margin
Painted around 1903, "Flower Clouds" belongs to a late group of pastels in which Odilon Redon turned from the black-and-white "noirs" of his early career toward luminous color. The work shows a sailboat carrying two ethereal figures across a phosphorescent sea beneath a sky dissolving into blossom-like clouds, a vision drawn entirely from the artist's imagination rather than observed nature. It exemplifies the mystical, deeply personal Symbolism that made Redon a touchstone for later generations of visionary painters, and is now held at the Art Institute of Chicago.
