This color woodblock print, made in 1769 by Ippitsusai Bunchō, depicts the kabuki actor Onoe Kikugorō I in the role of Izumi no Saburō from the play “Snowflakes: Plum Blossoms Kaomise.” Bunchō, active in Japan's Edo period, was among the pioneering artists of the actor-print genre, capturing the individual likenesses and dramatic poses of kabuki stars for an audience of devoted theater fans. The print is held in the public-domain collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art.
