On 14 February 1990, at Carl Sagan's urging, the Voyager 1 spacecraft turned its camera back toward home from more than 3.7 billion miles away and photographed Earth as it sped out of the solar system. In the resulting image our planet appears as a single pale speck less than a pixel wide, caught in a stray band of sunlight scattered inside the camera. Sagan later used the photograph to argue, in his book Pale Blue Dot, that this tiny point of light is the only home humanity has ever known.
