Bathers, usually nude figures in a landscape setting, were one of Paul Cézanne's most persistent lifelong subjects, allowing him to work through his central ambition of reconciling the human figure with landscape structure using geometric, architectonic form. This painting reflects that sustained investigation, in which figures are built from simplified, almost sculptural masses rather than naturalistic anatomy. Cézanne's bather paintings, culminating in his monumental "Large Bathers" canvases, were hugely influential on twentieth-century artists including Matisse and Picasso.

The detail is unbelievable for the price. I have wanted something by Cezanne since college, and Bathers was the one to get. The materials are noticeably better than the last two things I ordered online. Perfect from start to finish. 🙂

Better than expected
