Mont Sainte-Victoire, a limestone ridge near Cézanne's native Aix-en-Provence, became the central subject of his mature career, painted more than sixty times in oil and watercolor as he worked to capture its structure through simplified, faceted planes of color. This view across the Arc valley toward the mountain reflects that lifelong preoccupation, in which Cézanne treated the landscape almost as a problem in geometry, building solid form from color relationships rather than line or traditional perspective. The Sainte-Victoire paintings are considered a crucial bridge between Impressionism and twentieth-century modernism, directly inspiring Cubism.
