Paul Cézanne returned to the theme of bathers in a landscape throughout his life, working at varying scales from small, intimate compositions to his monumental late "Large Bathers" canvases. "Small Bathers" reflects this smaller-scale exploration of the theme, in which Cézanne worked through the same structural concerns — reconciling figure and landscape through simplified geometric form — on a more modest canvas. These smaller bather compositions functioned almost as studies for his more ambitious late works on the subject.
