This early study relates to "The Autopsy" (L'Autopsie), one of the dark, dramatically charged subjects Paul Cézanne pursued in his early career before he developed the structured, analytical landscape and still-life style for which he later became famous. Works from this period, sometimes called Cézanne's "romantic" or "dark" phase, are painted with thick, expressive impasto and a somber intensity quite different from his mature restraint. These early studies are valued for showing the dramatic starting point from which Cézanne's art evolved.
