In his final years, Paul Cézanne painted several still lifes of human skulls, a traditional vanitas subject reflecting on mortality that took on personal weight as the artist's own health declined. "The Three Skulls" applies his mature analytical method — built from structured planes of color and form — to this somber memento mori subject, treating bone and shadow with the same rigor he brought to apples or mountains. These late skull paintings are considered some of Cézanne's most psychologically intense and formally ambitious late works.
