Paul Gauguin worked across painting, printmaking, ceramics, and decorative design, and this sheet of animal and ornamental motifs reflects his broader interest in pattern, symbol, and simplified form drawn partly from non-Western and folk art sources. Such studies fed into the flattened, decorative compositions of his finished paintings, in which naturalistic representation was consistently subordinated to expressive shape and color. Gauguin's engagement with ornament and symbol was central to his rejection of Impressionist naturalism in favor of a more subjective, Symbolist art.
