Paul Gauguin painted the landscape of Tahiti repeatedly during his two extended stays on the island, from 1891 to 1893 and again from 1895 until his death in 1903, using its mountains, palms, and volcanic soil as a backdrop for his search for a simpler, more "primitive" way of life and art. "Tahitian Landscape" reflects his mature style, built on bold outlines and flattened, richly saturated color rather than naturalistic light and shadow. These landscapes, painted without regard for conventional perspective, were central to Gauguin's project of reinventing painting through decorative, symbolic form.
Printed edge to edge on a soft, durable woven area rug with a comfortable, non-slip feel.
