The burao, or Hibiscus tiliaceus, is a fast-growing tree found throughout Tahiti, its fibrous bark traditionally used by Polynesians for cordage and its broad leaves and yellow flowers a common sight across the island. Paul Gauguin, who painted the Tahitian landscape extensively during his two stays on the island between 1891 and his death in 1903, used Tahitian-language titles for many of his works as part of his effort to root his art in the culture and vocabulary of the place, rather than presenting it through a purely European lens. "Te burao" reflects that landscape interest, rendered in his mature style of bold outline and flattened, saturated color.

Printed edge to edge on a soft, durable woven area rug with a comfortable, non-slip feel.
