Peromedusae Jellyfish — Antique Natural History Print

Periphylla periphylla, the crimson helmet jellyfish, drifts through the ocean's dark middle depths, with many populations rising hundreds of metres after nightfall to feed on copepods before sinking back into the gloom. Unusually for a scyphozoan, it skips the seafloor polyp stage entirely, spending its whole life as a free-swimming, bioluminescent medusa. Ernst Haeckel classified this deep-sea species in his order Peromedusae and included it among the 100 plates of Kunstformen der Natur, his 1899-1904 atlas devoted to the symmetry of natural form.
