The Persian rose-and-nightingale motif, or gul-o-bulbul, began as a literary image but by the 14th century had entered the art of the book, and from there spread across nearly every decorative medium Persian craftsmen touched, including ceramics, woodwork, lacquer, enamel, and manuscript illumination. By the Qajar era of the 19th century, flowering plants rendered in this tradition were so pervasive that Persia became known in the West as the Kingdom of the Rose and Nightingale. The enduring popularity of the motif speaks to how central floral imagery was, and remains, to Persian visual culture.
