The tulip, now grown in gardens worldwide, has its roots on the Iranian plateau, where deliberate cultivation may stretch back to the Achaemenid era and was well established in cities such as Isfahan by the 10th and 11th centuries. Persian poets were already writing about the flower a thousand years ago, prizing it as a symbol of perfect love. From Persia, tulip bulbs travelled the trade routes into Ottoman Turkey and eventually the Netherlands, sparking a very different kind of flower fever, though the plant's story begins in Persian soil.
