The Old Persian word pairidaeza, a walled garden enclosure, is the root of the English word paradise, and Persian kings and nobles competed to lay out the most magnificent quartered gardens, known as chahar bagh, as a mark of refinement and power. Flowering plants, prized as much for symbolism as for scent and colour, sat at the centre of this tradition and later spread from garden beds into manuscripts, textiles, and decorative arts across the Persian world.
