The Story in the Margin
Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640) painted the harrowing “Massacre of the Innocents” — Herod's slaughter of Bethlehem's infants as told in the Gospel of Matthew — in two versions, the first around 1611–12 shortly after his return from Italy. Drawing on the drama he had studied in Caravaggio's paintings in Rome, Rubens filled the scene with wrenching violence and raw emotion rather than the serene piety typical of nativity scenes. The dramatic subject remains one of the most searing history paintings of the Flemish Baroque.
