The Story in the Margin
“St. Albert of Louvain” is an oil sketch by Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640) showing the martyred bishop and patron saint of Louvain gliding on a cloud, foreshortened as if seen from directly below. Rubens, the towering figure of Flemish Baroque painting, designed the composition for a church ceiling, where the dramatic upward perspective would have made the saint appear to float in the open sky above worshippers. The work is now held at the Art Institute of Chicago.
