Painted around 1609–10, “The Capture of Samson” by Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640) depicts the dramatic biblical moment when the Philistines seize the once-mighty Samson after Delilah has shorn away the source of his strength. Rubens, newly returned to Antwerp after years studying in Italy, filled the canvas with the surging, muscular energy and dramatic light he had absorbed from Caravaggio and the Italian Baroque. The painting hangs today in the Art Institute of Chicago.
