The Fall of Phaeton — Rubens Tapestry Blanket

“The Fall of Phaeton,” painted by Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640) during his formative years in Rome, depicts the young Phaeton plunging from the sky after losing control of his father Apollo's sun chariot — struck down by Zeus's thunderbolt before he could scorch the earth. Rubens captured the myth at its most violent instant, using dramatic light to heighten the terror on the faces of Phaeton and his panicked horses. The painting now hangs in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
