“The Four Continents,” painted around 1612–15 by Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640), is a grand mythological allegory personifying Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas as reclining female figures, each paired with the male river god of a great waterway — the Danube, Ganges, Nile and Río de la Plata. The painting reflects the Baroque fascination with the wider world and Rubens's gift for weaving classical allegory into monumental, richly modeled figures. It hangs today in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.
