The Story in the Margin
This lively mythological scene by Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640) depicts the wedding feast of the sea nymph Thetis and the mortal Peleus — the very banquet where the goddess of discord threw the golden apple that would eventually spark the Trojan War. Rubens shows the goddesses Venus, Juno and Minerva already vying for the prized apple, capturing the moment jealousy entered the celebration. The composition was created as an oil sketch for a hunting lodge built for King Philip IV of Spain.
