Pierre-Auguste Renoir painted the female nude, often set outdoors among trees and dappled light, as one of his central and most persistent subjects throughout his career, viewing it as a continuation of a long European tradition running back through Rubens and Titian. "Bathers in a Forest" reflects this lifelong preoccupation, combining Impressionist attention to sunlight filtering through foliage with Renoir's increasingly classical, rounded treatment of the human form in his later years. Renoir considered his bather paintings the summation of his artistic ambitions.
