Pierre-Auguste Renoir's reclining female figures, painted throughout his career, drew on a long tradition of the reclining nude in Western art while applying his own warm color and soft, caressing brushwork. "Woman Reclining, to the Left" reflects this consistent preoccupation with the female form at rest, a subject Renoir returned to with increasing frequency and freedom in his later years. His late nudes, painted even as arthritis limited his mobility, are celebrated for their glowing, almost sculptural sense of flesh and light.
