Painted in 1896, "In the Heather" is a late work by Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, the French muralist celebrated for pale, dreamlike scenes that favor mood over narrative. Figures rendered with the calm, static poses of ancient relief sculpture inhabit a moorland setting, built from simplified contours and chalky color inspired by early Italian fresco painting. The painting passed from the dealer Durand-Ruel to the Chicago collector Stanley McCormick within weeks of its completion, and Puvis's contemplative classicism went on to influence younger Symbolist and Post-Impressionist painters including Gauguin and Seurat.
Jacquard-woven both sides in soft, durable yarn; insert included.

My husband spotted this months ago and I finally gave in. The clarity of heather chavannes makes it look like the original was photographed yesterday.
I ordered this for a specific spot and it only half works there. The linework in heather chavannes is decent without ever being crisp. It works, and that is where my enthusiasm ends.
My only complaint is that I wish they made a bigger version. The scan behind heather chavannes is clean, with no obvious artifacts. It fits the space in the family room exactly the way I measured it. This shop has earned a repeat customer.
This was packed carefully and showed up without a mark on it. The subject of heather chavannes is what sold me, and it delivers. I have my eye on a second one.
This is the second thing I have bought here and both have been good. 🙂
