"Le Bois sacré cher aux Arts et aux Muses (The Sacred Grove, Beloved of the Arts and the Muses)" is one of Pierre Puvis de Chavannes's most celebrated murals, painted in the 1880s for the grand staircase of the Palais des Arts in Lyon. The composition imagines an idealized classical landscape populated by the Muses and personifications of the arts, rendered in Puvis's characteristic pale, matte, fresco-like palette and simplified, harmonious forms. The mural's serene classicism had a profound influence on later artists, including Georges Seurat and the Symbolists, who admired its flattened space and quiet, contemplative mood.
Printed edge to edge on a soft, durable woven area rug with a comfortable, non-slip feel.
