“Hunters in the Snow,” painted in 1565, shows weary hunters and their dogs trudging home over a frozen Flemish landscape as villagers skate on the ponds below. Pieter Bruegel the Elder (c. 1525–1569) painted the scene as part of a cycle depicting the months of the year, and its bleak, snow-blanketed hills are often cited as evidence of the unusually severe winters of the “Little Ice Age.” It remains one of the most beloved winter landscapes in Western art, now held in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.
