Around 1567 Pieter Bruegel the Elder painted The Peasant Wedding, a crowded barn feast where guests pass bowls of porridge, a bagpiper eyes the food, and the bride sits beaming beneath a paper crown. Bruegel, who reportedly dressed as a peasant to attend such celebrations, gives ordinary village life the dignity of history painting. It hangs in Vienna.
