This smaller, darker version of “The Tower of Babel” by Pieter Bruegel the Elder (c. 1525–1569) shows the biblical tower under construction, its dense brickwork rising in a spiral toward the clouds as tiny workers labor across its scaffolding. Painted after his famous 1563 Vienna version, this Rotterdam painting omits the figure of King Nimrod and takes on a more ominous, shadowed palette. It is now held in the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam.
