Pittsfield sits in Somerset County in central Maine, its position along the Sebasticook River providing water power that drew woolen mills and other manufacturing through the 19th century. The Maine Central Institute, founded in the town in 1866, made Pittsfield a regional center for secondary education as well as industry, drawing students from surrounding farming communities. Like many central Maine mill towns, Pittsfield's growth tracked closely with the fortunes of its textile industry, a story that period maps and atlases captured in careful topographic detail.
