Pomerine Jager. Adult Female — Antique Bird Print

The Pomarine Jaeger is the largest and heaviest of the jaegers, a family of predatory seabirds that nest on Arctic tundra and spend the rest of the year at sea, harassing gulls and terns in flight to steal their food. This adult female appears as plate 253 in John James Audubon's The Birds of America, engraved and hand-colored by Robert Havell Jr. and published in the 1827-1838 double-elephant-folio series that set the standard for American ornithological art.
