This chart carries the name of the Oliva family, a dynasty of chartmakers of Catalan origin who dominated Mediterranean portolan production for well over a century, with at least thirteen family members creating charts between 1538 and 1673. Beginning in Majorca, the family later established workshops in Messina, Naples, Barcelona, and the Tuscan port of Livorno, blending the older Majorcan cartographic tradition with Italian and Ottoman influences absorbed as the family moved from port to port. Charts bearing the Oliva name were prized across the Mediterranean for combining reliable coastal detail with the family's distinctive decorative flourishes.
