Portrait of a Woman Tapestry Blanket

Painted around 1540 after Corneille de Lyon (early 1500s–1575), a Dutch-born portraitist who became painter to the French court under King Henri II, this small, sharply naturalistic panel reflects Corneille's distinctive style of intimate, miniature-scale portraits set against a plain colored background. Corneille never signed his work, and relatively few paintings can be firmly attributed to him today, making surviving examples and copies of his refined court portraiture especially valued. The painting is held in the public-domain collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art.
