Painted in 1723 by Hyacinthe Rigaud (1659–1743), the official court portraitist to Louis XIV and Louis XV, this portrait depicts Cardinal Guillaume Dubois, who rose from royal tutor to chief minister of France before being named a cardinal in 1721. Rigaud, the most sought-after French portrait painter of his era, was celebrated for capturing the pomp and authority of his sitters through rich fabrics, confident poses and meticulous detail, qualities on full display in this formal likeness. The painting is held in the public-domain collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art.
Jacquard-woven in soft, durable cotton — a warm, fully reversible throw for the sofa, bed or reading chair.
