Painted in 1882–83 by William Merritt Chase (1849–1916), this portrait shows Dora Wheeler, Chase's first private student, seated before an embroidered silk hanging that nods to her own career as a pioneering textile designer. Wheeler went on to co-found one of America's first design firms run entirely by women, and Chase's portrait — awarded a gold medal in Munich in 1883 — captures both her creative world and his own confident, painterly brushwork. It is held in the public-domain collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art.
