Painted after 1788 by Gainsborough Dupont (1754–1797), nephew and studio assistant of the great English portraitist Thomas Gainsborough, this portrait of Mary Anne Jolliffe reflects the elegant, fluid brushwork Dupont absorbed directly from his uncle's studio. After Gainsborough's death in 1788, Dupont carried on his uncle's fashionable portrait practice in London, and works like this one show how closely he continued the graceful, informal style that had made Gainsborough one of Georgian England's most sought-after portraitists.
