This hanging scroll, painted in ink, color and gold on silk during Korea's Joseon dynasty (1700s), formally portrays the Buddhist monk Yeongwoldang Eungjin, honoring his standing as a great master within his monastic lineage. Portraits like this one were created to preserve the memory and spiritual authority of respected teachers, hung within temples as objects of both reverence and record. The painting is held in the public-domain collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art.
