Painted around 1831 by Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller (1793–1865), one of the leading Austrian painters of the Biedermeier era, this landscape shows the Prater, Vienna's great public park, rendered with the close, almost photographic attention to natural detail that defined Waldmüller's mature style. Waldmüller believed devoted study of nature — not academic convention — should be the foundation of painting, a conviction that put him at odds with the Vienna Academy but produced some of the era's most luminous landscape views.
