The Prothonotary Warbler is a golden-headed songbird of southeastern river swamps, named for the bright yellow hoods once worn by prothonotaries, senior scribes of the Catholic Church. Unlike most warblers, it nests in tree cavities low over standing water, often reusing old woodpecker holes in flooded willow, cypress, and buttonbush swamps. This male-and-female plate comes from John James Audubon's The Birds of America (1827-1838), engraved and hand-colored by Robert Havell Jr.
