The Prunes family were among the most accomplished chartmakers of 16th-century Majorca, part of the renowned Majorcan school of portolan cartography that dominated Mediterranean navigation for two centuries. Mateo Prunes, the family's best-documented member, signed and dated his charts by hand, including a celebrated 1563 example on gilded parchment now held in Madrid's Museo Naval, prized for combining precise coastal outlines with lavish ornamentation of compass roses, flags, and coats of arms. Charts bearing the Prunes name were working tools for Mediterranean sailors as much as they were showpieces of the chartmaker's art.
