The Purple Gallinule is one of the most vividly colored marsh birds of the American South, its iridescent purple-and-green plumage set off by a pale blue frontal shield, a red-and-yellow bill, and long yellow legs built for walking across lily pads and floating marsh vegetation. Audubon painted this adult male in spring plumage from life in Louisiana, delighting in watching the bird pick its way over water lilies. The resulting plate was engraved by Robert Havell Jr. for The Birds of America (1827-1838).
