Painted in 1347 by Wang Yuan, a child prodigy once tutored by the great Yuan-dynasty master Zhao Mengfu, this hanging scroll renders quails and sparrows among autumn foliage in ink alone. Wang Yuan was celebrated for translating the customarily colorful bird-and-flower genre into meticulous monochrome, using fine lines and graded ink washes to model each form. The result echoes the academic painting tradition while relying entirely on ink's tonal range for its detail.
