This gum tempera, ink and gold painting, made in 1744–45 for the Rajput kingdom of Kishangarh in northwestern India, illustrates the demon king Ravana battling the great vulture Jatayu, a dramatic episode drawn from the epic tradition surrounding the Ramayana. Kishangarh's royal workshop was renowned for its refined, lyrical painting style, and this folio reflects the courtly taste for illustrated manuscripts recounting India's great mythological narratives.
