The Story in the Margin

This plate reflects the work of Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759-1840), a Belgian-born botanical artist so celebrated for his watercolors that he was dubbed "the Raphael of flowers." From 1798 he enjoyed the patronage of Empress Joséphine, whose extensive gardens at Malmaison supplied specimens for his masterwork Les Liliacées (1802-1816), a multi-volume survey of lilies and lily-like plants rendered in hundreds of hand-colored engravings. Redouté's meticulous stipple-engraving technique set a new standard for botanical illustration, and his lily and rose plates remain among the most reproduced botanical images in the world.
