Reeds and geese had been a favorite pairing in Chinese painting for centuries before an anonymous Japanese monk, likely an amateur, tried the theme himself around 1314 to 1317. Following the custom of the time, the painter left the work unsigned, while the poem added above it by the eminent Chinese émigré monk Yishan Yining, complete with his signature and seal, was considered the more valuable contribution. The painting survives today as one of the earliest known Japanese ink paintings on this subject.
