Painted in 1632, “The Abduction of Europa” is one of Rembrandt van Rijn's rare mythological paintings, showing the princess Europa swept out to sea on the back of a disguised Zeus while her companions watch in horror from the shore. Rembrandt (1606–1669) staged the Ovid legend as a dramatic coastal scene, using bold, raking light to heighten the sense of sudden violence and abduction. The painting is now held in the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles.
